Consultation on Draft Revised Type Approval Guidelines
On October 21, 2026, the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) issued a public notice inviting stakeholders to comment on the draft revised Information and Communications Technologies (Type Approval) Guidelines.
The draft guidelines are intended to ensure that electronic communications equipment supplied, sold, or leased in Zambia complies with applicable technical, safety, and interoperability requirements. Once adopted, the revised guidelines will repeal and replace the 2022 Type Approval Guidelines.
The draft introduces several regulatory changes, including:
Risk-Based Classification: Classification of equipment into high-risk and low-risk categories
Post-Clearance Compliance: Conditional release of equipment from customs pending final type approval under specified conditions
Storage and Quarantine: Requirements for quarantined equipment to be stored at designated facilities at the importer’s expense for a maximum of 60 days
Compliance Requirements: Updated requirements for labeling and product information, as well as revised definitions for prohibited and exempt equipment
Stakeholders may submit written comments using the official Stakeholder Consultation Comment Form until November 20, 2026.
For further inquiries, ZICTA can be contacted at approvals@zicta.zm or +260 211 378200.
