What do EMC and EMI stand for?

EMC stands for Electromagnetic Compatibility: It means the ability of an electric or electronic device to function satisfactorily in its electromagnetic environment without affecting other devices by introducing intolerable electromagnetic disturbances.

EMI means Electromagnetic Interference: This is when a device is producing electromagnetic interferences and disrupts the operation of other electronic devices. EMI can be both man-made such as computers and naturally arising like for example solar radiation or electrical storms. EMC and EMI are often used interchangeably as they both determine whether an electronic device is able to function satisfactorily in an electromagnetic environment. 

What is EMC testing and why is it important?

EMC testing is the measurement of:

  • a device's emission levels of radio frequency (EMC)

  • the immunity to RF emissions (EMI)

Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing is important to see whether a device meets the test standards. Without EMC Testing there would be an immense risk of for example helicopters falling out of the sky or your phone losing its signal, thus all needed devices for those machines have to pass lots of tests to meet the requirements and to guarantee the EMI compliance. This is the only way to ensure a successful market launch of your product.

Is EMC testing mandatory?

The EMC Certification is mandatory in most markets. The EMC/EMI Testing is part of the product development, so all devices are subject to this testing. On the European Market all the electric and electronic devices must meet the standard compliance and be designated with the CE marking

How to do EMC testing?

The tests for each type of emission are different. It divides broadly into emissions testing and susceptibility testing. The EMC Testing of large equipment systems is mostly done on open-air test sites (OATS), however, the RF (radio frequency) testing of a physical prototype is performed in specialized EMC test chambers, as you can find at IBL-Lab GmbH. Accredited testing labs  Usually, a given run of tests for a particular piece of equipment will require an EMC test plan and follow-up test report. For a successful EMC compliance test we recommend choosing an accredited testing lab, that helps you in all steps and ensures your device is ready going to the global market.
