EU: Harmonisation of 116–260 GHz Spectrum
Key Elements of the Proposal
This initiative is part of the EU’s broader effort to support emerging technologies such as advanced radar and sensing systems—particularly in automotive, industrial, and security sectors—by ensuring regulatory consistency across Member States.
Spectrum Designation: EU Member States would be required to make the 116–260 GHz band available for radiodetermination applications (e.g., radar, motion detection, and object tracking) on a non-interference, non-protection basis. This means users cannot claim protection from interference nor cause harmful interference to other services.
Harmonization Goal: The main objective is to reduce or eliminate trade barriers by aligning spectrum availability and technical conditions throughout the EU.
The consultation was launched on October 2, 2025, and will remain open until December 1, 2025.
