Public Consultation on Improving Performance in the 6 GHz Band

United States
United States
, 2026-03-12
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) seeks comments on two proposals aimed at improving the performance of unlicensed devices in the 6 GHz band (5.925–7.125 GHz). Deadline: March 23, 2026.

Key Proposals

Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC) Systems

The FCC proposes allowing AFC systems to consider building entry loss (BEL) when determining frequency and power availability for access points operating in both standard-power and Low-Power Indoor (LPI) modes (composite indoor/standard-power access points).

This approach is intended to:

  • Improve signal strength and coverage inside homes and buildings

  • Maintain protection of licensed services operating in the 6 GHz band

Low-Power Indoor Access Points on Cruise Ships

The FCC is also proposing to permit low-power indoor access points to operate on cruise ships.

According to the Commission, the potential risk of interference is limited due to:

  • The relatively small number of cruise ships

  • The signal-blocking characteristics of thick metal ship structures

Additional Consultation Topics

The FCC is also requesting comments on possible rule changes to further align unlicensed 6 GHz band regulations with recent technological developments and evolving business needs.

Comment Deadline

Stakeholders are invited to submit comments by March 23, 2026 via the Federal Register notice.
