Supporting 5G
The ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority) has updated its licensing regulations to support new technologies and align Australia with international standards.
Key Updates:
Wireless Communication:
Expansion of 60 GHz frequency range from 57-66 GHz to 57-71 GHz for indoor and outdoor use
Support for wireless gigabit systems (IEEE 802.11ad) for 5G and WiFi backhaul
New regulations for transmitters in the 57-64 GHz band for motion sensing technology
Underground and Radar Technology:
Adjustment of regulations for underground transmitters in the 70-520 MHz range
Revision of 76-77 GHz radar usage for rail and road safety
New regulations for ground and wall penetration radar (30-12,400 MHz)
International Harmonization:
Alignment of ultra-wideband device regulations with US and EU standards:
3,100-3,400 MHz and 8,500-9,000 MHz for generic devices
6,000-8,500 MHz for aviation applications
These updates are documented in the "Radiocommunications (Low Interference Potential Devices) Class License Variation 2019 (No. 1)." Following public consultation with 18 received submissions, the changes were finalized.
The ACMA continues to accept suggestions from industry and individuals for future updates to licensing regulations.
