IEC 62368-1 Safety Standard
Testing electronic devices according to IEC 62368-1
IEC 62368-1 follows a new safety philosophy that requires a detailed assessment. Energy sources are classified, protective devices are defined and instructions for use are provided. The new hazard-based approach (HBSE: Hazard Based Safety Engineering) can be applied to a wide range of products and requires potential hazards to be identified at an early stage during product development.
Electrical, thermal, chemical, kinetic and radiant energy are tested. This includes high-voltage tests, insulation resistance, leakage currents and structural requirements for the enclosure design.
Tests in accordance with IEC 62368-1 for Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment are an essential part of product safety right from the design and development phase. Let our experts advise you and save time and money.

Frequently Asked Questions
All you need to know about IEC 62368-1
- Why is the 62368-1 standard important?
-
The 62368-1 standard is crucial for manufacturers who want to test their products as it ensures compliance with modern safety requirements. By complying with this standard, manufacturers increase product safety, follow industry best practice and comply with international regulations. IEC 62368-1 testing helps to identify potential hazards, evaluate protective measures and ultimately helps to produce high quality and safe products that inspire confidence in both regulators and consumers.
- What were the previous standards and are they still applicable?
-
The standards IEC 60950-1 (office equipment) and IEC 60065 (electronics, entertainment) have been withdrawn since 20.12.2020. The only relevant standard for audio/video, information and communication technology is now the new standard DIN EN IEC 62368-1. It is crucial for conformity, as references to the old standards in declarations of conformity must be reissued in accordance with the current safety requirements of IEC 62368-1.
- What are the key testing requirements of IEC 62368-1 for electronic equipment?
-
IEC 62368-1 imposes key testing requirements for electronic equipment, including assessments of electrical, thermal, chemical, kinetic, and radiation energy sources. Testing covers aspects such as high voltage, insulation resistance, leakage currents, and structural design considerations like strength and fire resistance. The standard also introduces a new safety philosophy, classifying energy sources and specifying protective measures. Manufacturers must undergo rigorous evaluations to ensure their products meet these requirements, guaranteeing a comprehensive assessment of safety across various energy types and promoting compliance with international safety standards.
