Single Fault Test - IEC 62368-1

In the IEC 62368-1 test setup shown here, the standard states that protective devices must remain intact even under the condition of a single fault. Protective devices provide protection against life-threatening voltages, high temperatures and fire, for example. These tests are therefore essential for the safety and certification of your electrical products.

Glow-Wire Flammability Test - IEC 60695-2-11

Glow wire testing is a indirect flame method for plastics according to IEC 60695-2-11 to prove the suitability as an insulating part of an electrical or electronic device.
The testing is performed by heating an element to a pre-determined temperature. The sample to be tested is fixed and a tissue paper is placed directly under the sample. Find out more in our video.

Needle-Flame Test - IEC 60695-11-5

In terms of flammability requirements, the needle flame test is widely accepted to support ad hoc verification of, for example, V-0 or V-1 of plastics. The fully automated system reduces manual errors and leads to a more comparable result. We perform the tests according to IEC 60695-11-5 to meet the respective requirements for your electrical product.

Test Scenarios

The following tests are described in different national and international standards:

High Voltage Test (Dielectric Voltage-Withstand Test)

During this test the device is applied by a higher voltage than usual. The ability of the product to withstand a test voltage is important to pass the test.

Leakage Current Test

The currents flowing to earth via the protective conductor or metallic parts are measured. Alternating currents can flow to earth even if the insulation impedance is in accordance with the regulations. If these currents are too high, they represent a danger to the human body.

Insulation Resistance Test

This test measures the quality of the protective conductor of the product.

Ground Continuity Test

Ensuring that a clear circuit exists between all exposed metal surfaces and the power system ground.

Single Fault Tests

These tests ensure that the occurrence of a single abnormal external condition or the failure of a single means of protection from a hazard does not create a safety hazard. Where a single fault condition is not applied, the equipment is said to be in "normal condition" (NC).

Temperature Test

In specific climatic chambers the product is tested for its response to extreme temperatures.

Various Influences on Product Safety

The hazards that can emanate from electrical products are differentiated according to the type and "size" of the associated energy source, which are then investigated according to the catalogue of requirements:

Electrical
The compliance with correct insulation coordination is one of the most important issues, such as protection against body currents in order to prevent fatal consequences. Devices such as plug-in power supplies, chargers, laptops, IT equipment and household appliances are thoroughly tested for their isolation capability.

Power
Electrical systems generally represent a fire hazard in the household. Harmonized standards offer approaches to reduce the probability of occurrence or to deal safely with potential fires inside of the enclosures. In the absence of proofs of the common fire classes HB or V-0 (ANSI / UL-94), substitute tests can be carried out in the laboratory to avoid time delays.

Mechanical
Devices should be equipped with stable enclosures. If the enclosure has no obvious additional functions, such as electrical insulation, for example in the case of Class II units, or when it serves as a fire protection enclosure, the requirements for mechanical stability increase.

Thermal
Temperatures during normal operation as well as single-fault testing are examined. On the one hand, burn injuries must be avoided while users touch a device. On the other hand, the operating temperatures of critical components must be observed.

Radiation
Under this term you can find sources such as X-rays, bright light, sound pressure, laser and electromagnetic fields.

Frequently Asked Questions

All you need to know about safety testing

Why is electrical safety testing so important?

Every year many electrical shocks occur with the consequences of injuries or even deaths related to the use of electric products. To avoid the risk of electrical shocks to customers, it is necessary to ensure safety compliance with national and international standards to evaluate the potential risks of electrical shocks when using a product.

What are the advantages for the end product if its components are already tested according to the safety standard?

One of the biggest advantages is the cost factor. For example, power supplies, transformers, VDRs or similar can be installed in the device. In this case, they are only tested for their area of application according to 62368-1. Safety-relevant components must be certified according to certain standards. Otherwise, these components would have to be tested separately.

What are protection classes?

Protection classes are the classification of electrical equipment according to their level of protection. They define safety measures that protect against voltages that are dangerous to touch. In the EU, there are three protection classes (class I, II, III), which are represented by symbols.

What is the purpose of the needle-flame test?

The needle-flame test is a method that involves burning a small sample of the material with an open flame, usually from a butane lighter or torch. The material is then observed for any signs of combustion, such as smoking or flaming. This test can be used to measure how quickly and easily something will burn when exposed to an open flame. It can also help identify which types of materials are more likely to cause fires if left unattended in hazardous areas.

What does an electrical safety analyzer measure?

An electrical safety analyzer is an instrument used to perform the different safety tests to evaluate that the tested device is in compliance with electrical safety requirements. Often it is used to test medical equipment.
