Digital Product Passport and Data Management

The EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) introduces the Digital Product Passport (DPP) — a mandatory framework for product traceability and sustainability across the product lifecycle.

Each device placed on the EU market must provide standardized digital information accessible via QR code or NFC, including:

  • Material composition and use of critical raw materials

  • Battery data, such as performance, lifetime, and recyclability

  • Repairability and spare-part availability

  • Environmental footprint and energy efficiency

In practice, preparing data structures, supplier inputs, and system integration can take 12–18 months, making early preparation essential for success.

Who Is Affected by the Digital Product Passport

The Digital Product Passport will first apply to batteries from 2027 under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 on batteries and waste batteries.
Delegated acts under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) will introduce DPP requirements for electronic and connected devices from 2028 onward.
Further sectors, including textiles, steel and construction materials, are expected to be implemented by 2030 as the EU expands the sustainability framework.

  • Manufacturers of wireless, battery-powered, or connected devices (IoT, wearables, telecom)

  • Importers and distributors placing products on the EU market

  • Suppliers providing components or materials subject to traceability requirements

  • OEMs and contract manufacturers operating within the EU market

A clear understanding of the regulatory timeline is essential to plan data collection and system integration effectively.

DPP Implementation Timeline

The EU is introducing the Digital Product Passport (DPP) in several phases across EU regulations. Tracking key milestones helps manufacturers plan data collection, supplier coordination and system integration in time.

Framework
01Established under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).
Registry
02EU Registry Setup: Central DPP registry planned for mid-2026.
Batteries
03Battery DPP: Mandatory for rechargeable and industrial batteries from Feb 2027.
Electronics
04DPP for electronic and connected devices from 2028 onward.
Expansion
05Additional Sectors: Further rollout to textiles, steel, and construction by 2030.

How to Prepare for DPP Compliance

Early planning ensures efficient data management and smooth regulatory compliance as DPP obligations take effect.
The following steps help organizations build a structured foundation for upcoming DPP requirements.

  • 01 – Assess Data Landscape
Identify all product, material, and supplier data relevant for traceability.
Review data sources, formats, and ownership across internal systems.

  • 02 – Engage Suppliers
Establish communication channels and data-sharing formats with key suppliers.
Ensure transparency and compatibility throughout the value chain.

  • 03 – Integrate Systems
Link product-lifecycle, PLM and ERP systems with compliance tools to enable seamless data exchange.
Plan technical interfaces to connect with the EU DPP registry.

  • 04 – Define Governance & Documentation
Assign internal responsibilities for data quality, validation, and version control.
Maintain audit-ready documentation aligned with ESPR and related regulations.

  • 05 – Monitor Regulatory Updates
Track delegated acts and new product categories defined under the ESPR framework.
Adjust internal processes to remain compliant as the DPP scope expands.

These steps form the digital foundation for efficient DPP implementation — scalable through platforms like TAMSys.
