UKCA Marking for Radio and Electronic Products

The UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) mark is the conformity marking for many regulated products placed on the market in Great Britain following the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union. While UKCA is the designated UK marking, CE-marked products continue to be recognized for many product categories in Great Britain. Different rules apply to the Northern Ireland market under the UKNI framework.

Your Market Access for the UK

Manufacturers placing radio and electronic products on the market in Great Britain must demonstrate compliance with applicable UK regulations. Conformity is assessed based on technical documentation and test results demonstrating compliance with the applicable requirements.

Where required, conformity assessment may involve a UK Market Conformity Assessment Body (UKMCAB). After demonstrating compliance, manufacturers issue a UK Declaration of Conformity and affix the UKCA marking to the product, packaging, or accompanying documentation.

Background of UKCA Certification

Requirements for radio equipment in the UK are defined in the Radio Equipment Regulations 2017, which establish the regulatory framework for wireless devices placed on the Great Britain market. These regulations address essential requirements such as efficient use of the radio spectrum, electromagnetic compatibility, and protection of health and safety.

Compliance is demonstrated through testing and technical documentation based on the applicable designated standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

All you need to know about UK marking

Is CE marking still accepted in Great Britain?

Yes. For many product categories, CE marking continues to be recognized for products placed on the market in Great Britain. Manufacturers may therefore use either CE marking or the UKCA marking, provided the product complies with the applicable UK regulations.

What does the UKCA mark mean?

By affixing the UKCA marking, the manufacturer or importer declares that the product complies with the applicable regulations in the United Kingdom. Depending on the product category, conformity assessment may involve testing and, where required, an approved UK Conformity Assessment Body. Both are prerequisites for placing regulated products on the Great Britain market.

Who awards the UKCA mark?

The regulations relating to the use of the mark fall within the remit of the UK Government's Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

How is the UKCA marking done?

The marking must be applied to the radio equipment or its nameplate in a visible and permanently legible manner. Where permitted, the mark may alternatively appear on the packaging or in the accompanying documentation. The marking consists of the UKCA symbol together with information identifying the manufacturer and the product.

What does the UKNI mark stand for?

The UKNI marking stands for "United Kingdom Northern Ireland" and is used in Northern Ireland. It was introduced to reflect the specific requirements and regulations in Northern Ireland resulting from Brexit and the Northern Ireland Protocol. The UKNI mark indicates that a product complies with the applicable regulations for sale and use in Northern Ireland.

Are there retention periods for the technical documentation and the declaration of conformity?

The declaration of conformity and the technical documentation on which it is based must be kept in the company for a period of 10 years after delivery of the product. During this period, they can be requested by competent UK authorities.
