UKCA Marking for your Radio and Telecommunication Products

The UKCA marking has replaced the CE marking in the UK, since the country left the European Union. The letters stand for United Kingdom Conformity Assessed (UKCA). From January 1, 2025, only the UK mark will be accepted on newly imported products in England, Scotland and Wales. Special rules apply to Northern Ireland. The extension of the deadline by 2 years from 2023 to 2025, was announced by the UK government in November 2022.

Your Market Access for the UK

The conformity assessment of your radio equipment will be carried out by a body certified by the United Kingdom (UK Market Conformity Assessment Body, UKMCAB) as of 2025. The basis for the conformity assessment is technical documentation and test results. In addition, you must ensure and prove that the production conditions in your company ensure high quality of the products. In the applicable standards of Great Britain, you can find out which specific requirements your products must meet and which tests are required for proof.

If the UKMCAB determines conformity, you must issue the declaration of conformity and affix the UKCA marking to the equipment, or at least indicate it in the operating instructions and on the packaging, before placing the product on the market. In addition to the logo, the marking also includes the manufacturer's details and the type, batch or serial number.

Background of UKCA Certification

The requirements for conformity of equipment using radio technologies for the UK market are the subject of the Radio Equipment Regulations 2017, which are updated on an ongoing basis. In 2017, the United Kingdom, or UK, transposed the EU Radio Equipment Directive into national law.

After leaving the EU in 2018, the regulation was adapted to national law. Specific conditions for the UK market were set, and references to EU institutions were changed. Companies are now required to demonstrate that their products meet all essential requirements in the UK with a conformity assessment under UK law. These primarily concern the electromagnetic compatibility of the products and the protection of the radio network against interference. In addition to the efficient use of the radio spectrum, the aim is to achieve a high level of safety for the health of people and pets and to protect property. The specific technical requirements for radio equipment are contained in the British standards for the corresponding types of equipment. If all the requirements applicable to the radio equipment in the UK are met, the company issues a declaration of conformity and affixes the required marking to the equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

All you need to know about UK marking

What does the UKCA mark mean?

By means of the mark, the manufacturer declares that he accepts responsibility for the conformity of the product with the requirements applicable in the UK. The marking is preceded by a conformity assessment by a body approved in the UK. Both are prerequisites for access to the UK market.

Who awards the UKCA mark?

The regulations relating to the use of the mark fall within the remit of the UK Government's Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

How is the UKCA marking done?

The marking must be applied to the radio equipment or nameplate. It must be placed in a prominent location and be permanently legible. Alternatively, the mark can be on the packaging or in the technical documentation for the users of the product. The full mark consists of the UKCE symbol and information identifying the manufacturer and the product.

Are there retention periods for the technical documentation and the declaration of conformity?

The declaration of conformity and the technical documentation on which it is based must be kept in the company for a period of 10 years after delivery of the product. During this period, they can be requested by competent UK authorities.
