Market Approval for South Africa

All Regions » Africa » South Africa
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) with headquarter in Centurion defines the regulatory requirements for radio type approval in South Africa. According to current regulations, ICASA bases its application on EU test reports on the efficient use of the frequency spectrum, electromagnetic compatibility and electrical safety. Consequently, there is no need for separate in-country compliance testing. Besides, a local representative has to be provided. We will happily provide you either with one of our long-term local representatives or cooperate with your local representative. After successful evaluation by ICASA you will receive a Radio Equipment Type Approval Certificate with unlimited validity.
Before your product is launched on the market, an appropriate conformity label must be affixed to the equipment and the packaging. We will be pleased to advise you on the mandatory conformity markings for the South African market and to assist you with additional applications such as the application form for the user manual marking.
Our dedicated team will be at your disposal for any questions regarding homologation in South Africa. On request we can also advise and assist you regarding ICASA TTE Certificates, SABS Certificate of Conformity and NRCS Letter of Attorney (LoA) for Electrical Safety.

Do we need to affix the conformity label on the product?

You may submit a written request for waiver of labeling to the ICASA authority. The authority may grant permission to label the user manual instead.

What is the size of the ICASA label?

The minimum size of the ICASA label is 3 mm x 3 mm. The label contains the ICASA logo and the number of the ICASA certificate in the following format: TA XXXX-YYYY, where: TA stands for the type approval, XXXX for the year in which the TA certificate was issued, and YYYY for the number sequence assigned by ICASA.

What is the role of ICASA in South Africa?

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) plays a central role as the regulator of the telecommunications, broadcasting and postal sectors. As the regulator, ICASA receives and investigates complaints about the services provided by licensed companies in these industries to ensure accountability and public satisfaction.
