Return Loss ↔ VSWR Converter
Convert return loss in decibels to voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR), or convert VSWR back to return loss. The calculation uses the magnitude of the reflection coefficient and assumes a passive RF system.
Formula:
VSWR = (1 + 10(-RL/20)) / (1 - 10(-RL/20))
Notes:
- VSWR = 1 → perfect impedance match (no reflections)
- Return Loss > 20 dB → well-matched system
- Return Loss < 10 dB → critical mismatch
- VSWR > 2:1 → risk of power loss or signal reflections
This tool helps with:
Assessing impedance matching in antennas, cables, and RF components.
Converting measurement results between return loss and VSWR.
Estimating reflection severity during RF testing and troubleshooting.
