ISED RSS-210

RSS-210 is a Radio Standards Specification issued by ISED Canada that sets out requirements for low-power license-exempt radiocommunication devices. It covers a wide variety of short-range transmitters that do not fall under the scope of other RSS documents.

Scope and Application

RSS-210 applies to:

  • Low-power transmitters operating in various license-exempt frequency bands

  • Devices using analog or digital modulation, including pulsed and continuous wave transmissions

  • Equipment types not covered by specific standards like RSS-247 (Wi-Fi/Bluetooth) or RSS-310

Typical applications:

  • Remote controls (e.g., keyless entry)

  • Alarm systems

  • Wireless switches and sensors

  • RFID and telemetry

  • Automotive and industrial short-range links

Frequency Bands and Modulation

RSS-210 supports use of:

  • ISM and SRD bands (e.g., 27 MHz, 49 MHz, 433 MHz, 915 MHz)

  • Modulation schemes such as on-off keying, FM, digital burst, DSSS, and FHSS

Devices must comply with:

  • Frequency allocation tables published by ISED

  • Field strength limits for radiated emissions

  • Restricted frequency bands as defined in the document

Certification and Compliance

Devices under RSS-210 are typically:

  • Subject to ISED Certification via a recognized FCB

  • Tested for radiated emissions and compliance with specific emission masks

  • Evaluated based on field strength rather than conducted output power

RSS-210 is used in conjunction with RSS-Gen for labeling, documentation, and general administrative requirements.
