ETSI EN 300 220

ETSI EN 300 220 is a harmonized European standard that specifies technical requirements for Short Range Devices (SRD) operating in the 25 MHz to 1 GHz frequency range. It is applicable under the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU and covers various low-power wireless applications in the ISM and SRD bands.

Scope and Application

The standard applies to radio devices using analog or digital modulation techniques, including:

Common technologies and applications:

  • Sub-GHz IoT systems (e.g. 868 MHz, 433 MHz, 915 MHz)

  • Smart metering and Wireless M-Bus

  • Remote keyless entry, alarms, industrial sensors

  • Proprietary FHSS systems and telemetry

Devices covered include:

  • Battery-powered radio transmitters and receivers

  • Sensors, actuators, control units, gateways

  • Data transmission systems up to 600 kbps

Frequency Bands

Typical operational sub-bands in Europe:

  • 433.05–434.79 MHz (ISM)

  • 863–870 MHz (SRD band)

  • 868–870 MHz (IoT / LPWAN applications)

  • 915 MHz (for global compatibility, not harmonized in EU)

The exact usable frequency and duty cycle depends on the band plan defined in ETSI TR 103 056 and national regulations.

Key Technical Requirements

  • Receiver category: defined performance classes (Category 1–3)

  • Modulation limits: compliance with spurious and out-of-band emission masks

  • Carrier power: typically ≤ 25 mW ERP, depending on band and use case

  • Occupied bandwidth: must fit within designated sub-band

  • Channel access: Listen Before Talk (LBT), Adaptive Frequency Agility (AFA), or duty cycle limits

Certification and Compliance

Devices must conform to EN 300 220 to demonstrate compliance with the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) and qualify for CE marking.

The certification process includes:

  • EMC and RF performance testing

  • Evaluation of spurious emissions and receiver blocking

  • Declaration of Conformity (DoC) with reference to EN 300 220

Note: EN 300 220 is often used in conjunction with EN 301 489-3 (EMC for SRD) and EN 303 131 or EN 303 204 for LPWAN systems.
