EN 61000-6-4
EN 61000-6-4 is a European generic EMC emission standard for industrial environments that may be used as a harmonized standard under the EMC Directive where applicable. EN IEC 61000-6-4:2019 is the European adoption of IEC 61000-6-4:2018 through CENELEC.
The standard defines emission requirements and measurement methods to help ensure that electrical and electronic equipment used in industrial environments does not generate electromagnetic disturbances that could impair radio reception, communication services, or nearby equipment.
Scope and Application
EN 61000-6-4 applies to equipment that:
Is intended for use in industrial locations, both indoor and outdoor
Does not have a dedicated product-specific or product-family EMC emission standard
Must demonstrate controlled electromagnetic emissions in industrial electromagnetic environments
It covers electrical and electronic equipment intended for use in industrial environments, including equipment connected to power networks, control systems, machinery installations, and industrial infrastructure.
Key Technical Requirements
| Emission Area & Standard Reference | Typical Purpose |
|---|---|
|
Conducted emissions CISPR 16 series |
Assessment of disturbances conducted on power and relevant ports |

- Emission limits: Requirements are selected to provide adequate protection of radio services in industrial electromagnetic environments.
- Measurement methods: Measurements are performed according to the applicable CISPR 16 methods and the port requirements defined by EN IEC 61000-6-4.
Typical Test Setup
Conducted emissions: Line Impedance Stabilization Network (LISN) or appropriate coupling network connected to the Equipment Under Test (EUT)
Radiated emissions: Semi-anechoic chamber, open-area test site, or equivalent test environment with calibrated antennas and EMI receiver
Operating conditions: EUT operated in representative or worst-case modes to capture maximum emission levels
Port configuration: Relevant AC/DC power, signal, control, and communication ports configured according to the applicable test requirements
Measurement instrumentation: EMI receiver or spectrum analyzer with detectors and bandwidths defined by the relevant CISPR measurement methods
Certification and Compliance
Under the EMC Directive (2014/30/EU), EN 61000-6-4 can be used to support the presumption of conformity with emission requirements, where it is listed in the Official Journal of the European Union and applicable to the product.
It is typically applied when no more specific product or product-family EMC emission standard is applicable.
If EN 61000-6-4 is used for the conformity assessment, the related test reports form part of the technical documentation and the standard may be referenced in the EU Declaration of Conformity (DoC).
Lifecycle Relevance
Supports pre-compliance testing during R&D to identify emission issues before final assessment.
Provides the framework for EMC conformity assessment in the absence of a product-specific emission standard.
Remains relevant for design changes, component substitutions, product modifications, or reassessment when updated harmonized versions are published in the Official Journal of the EU.
