EN 61000-6-1
EN 61000-6-1 is a European generic EMC immunity standard for residential, commercial, and light-industrial environments that may be used as a harmonized standard under the EMC Directive where applicable. EN IEC 61000-6-1:2019 is the European adoption of IEC 61000-6-1:2016 through CENELEC.
The standard defines immunity requirements and test methods to help ensure that electrical and electronic equipment used in residential, commercial, public, and light-industrial environments can continue to operate as intended when exposed to electromagnetic disturbances.
Scope and Application
EN 61000-6-1 applies to equipment that:
Is intended for use in homes, offices, retail environments, public areas, and light-industrial locations
Does not have a dedicated product-specific or product-family EMC immunity standard
Must demonstrate adequate resilience to common electromagnetic disturbances in non-industrial environments
It covers electrical and electronic equipment connected to public low-voltage supply networks as well as DC-powered or battery-operated devices intended for residential, commercial, public, and light-industrial environments.

- Performance criteria: Equipment behavior is assessed during and after the tests according to defined performance criteria.
- Measurement methods: Tests are performed according to the relevant EN 61000-4-x basic standards.
Typical Test Setup
ESD: ESD simulator applied to accessible surfaces and coupling planes around the Equipment Under Test (EUT)
Radiated RF: Semi-anechoic chamber or suitable immunity test environment with calibrated field generation
Burst and Surge: Coupling/decoupling networks connected to AC/DC power ports and relevant signal or control lines
Conducted RF: RF disturbance injection through coupling devices or clamps on cables and ports
Voltage dips and interruptions: AC power supply simulator used to reproduce short-term supply disturbances
Certification and Compliance
Under the EMC Directive (2014/30/EU), EN 61000-6-1 can be used to support the presumption of conformity with immunity requirements, where it is listed in the Official Journal of the European Union and applicable to the product.
It is typically applied when no more specific product or product-family EMC immunity standard is applicable.
If EN 61000-6-1 is used for the conformity assessment, the related test reports form part of the technical documentation and the standard may be referenced in the EU Declaration of Conformity (DoC).
Lifecycle Relevance
Supports pre-compliance testing during R&D to verify immunity performance.
Provides the framework for EMC conformity assessment in the absence of a product-specific standard.
Remains relevant for design changes or reassessment when new harmonized versions are published in the Official Journal of the EU.
