EN 55035 (CISPR 35)

EN 55035 is the European harmonized standard for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) immunity of multimedia equipment (MME). It is published by CENELEC and is technically identical to CISPR 35, developed by the International Special Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR) under the IEC.

The standard defines immunity requirements to ensure that multimedia equipment continues to operate as intended when subjected to electromagnetic disturbances. It applies to multimedia equipment (MME) with AC or DC supply voltage up to 600 V.

Scope and Application

EN 55035 applies to a broad range of multimedia and information technology equipment, including:

  • Computers, monitors, and peripherals

  • Smart TVs, set-top boxes, and streaming devices

  • Gaming consoles and audio/video equipment

  • Broadcast receivers and integrated multimedia systems

It is intended to be applied together with EN 55032 (CISPR 32), which specifies emission requirements. Only in combination do the two standards provide a complete EMC assessment for CE marking.

EN 55035 replaced earlier immunity standards EN 55020 and EN 55024, which were withdrawn in 2022, consolidating immunity requirements for multimedia equipment.

Key Technical Requirements

Test Category Standard Reference Typical Test Levels
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) EN 61000-4-2 ±4 kV contact, ±8 kV air
Radiated RF Immunity EN 61000-4-3 3 V/m, 80 MHz – 1 GHz (extensions possible up to 6 GHz)

  • Performance criteria: Essential functions must continue to operate as intended during and after exposure. Criteria A/B/C are defined depending on the disturbance type.
  • Referenced standards: All test methods are defined in the EN 61000-4-x series.

Typical Test Setup

  • ESD: ESD simulator gun applied to accessible surfaces of the Equipment Under Test (EUT)

  • Radiated RF: Semi-anechoic chamber with broadband antennas and RF amplifiers

  • Burst and Surge: Coupling/decoupling networks applied to supply and I/O lines

  • Conducted RF: Injection via coupling clamps into cables and ports

Certification and Compliance

  • Under the EMC Directive (2014/30/EU), EN 55035 is a harmonized standard used to demonstrate conformity with immunity requirements.

  • It must be applied together with EN 55032 to cover both emissions and immunity for multimedia equipment.

  • Test reports according to EN 55035 must be retained and referenced in the EU Declaration of Conformity (DoC).

Lifecycle Relevance

  • Supports pre-compliance testing during product development to identify immunity weaknesses early.

  • Forms the basis for final EMC certification required for CE marking of multimedia equipment.

  • Remains relevant for product modifications and when new harmonized versions are listed in the Official Journal of the EU.
