EN 55035 (CISPR 35)
EN 55035 is the European harmonized standard for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) immunity of multimedia equipment (MME). Published by CENELEC, EN 55035:2017 is based on CISPR 35:2016 and incorporates common European modifications.
The standard specifies immunity requirements intended to provide an adequate level of intrinsic immunity so that multimedia equipment can operate as intended in its environment. The applicable performance criteria determine what temporary degradation or recovery is permitted during and after a test. Its scope covers MME with a rated AC or DC supply voltage not exceeding 600 V.
Scope and application
EN 55035 covers a broad range of multimedia equipment, including:
computers, monitors and peripheral equipment
televisions, set-top boxes and streaming devices
gaming consoles and audio/video equipment
broadcast receivers and integrated multimedia systems
EN 55032 (CISPR 32) addresses emissions from multimedia equipment and is commonly considered alongside EN 55035. A complete EMC assessment also considers the applicable legislation, product characteristics, ports and any additional electromagnetic phenomena.
EN 55035 consolidated immunity requirements previously addressed by EN 55020, EN 55024 and EN 55103-2. The reference to EN 55035:2017 together with A11:2020 was published in the Official Journal of the European Union in 2021. Transition assessments should consider the specific withdrawal status of each predecessor edition and the corresponding period of presumption of conformity.
Selected Technical Requirements
The following overview highlights selected immunity phenomena and representative requirements. It is not a complete test plan. Applicability, test levels, coupling methods and performance criteria must be determined from the relevant edition for the equipment, its ports, functions and intended environment.

- Performance criteria: Criterion A generally requires normal performance during and after the test. Criteria B and C may permit defined temporary degradation or loss of function, subject to the recovery requirements specified for the disturbance and function.
- Test methods: Most immunity phenomena reference standards in the EN 61000-4-x series. Broadband impulsive disturbances also use procedures defined in CISPR 35 / EN 55035 itself.
Typical test arrangements
ESD: direct discharges to accessible conductive surfaces and indirect discharges to coupling planes using an ESD simulator
Radiated RF: a validated radiated-immunity test environment with suitable antennas and RF amplification; a semi-anechoic chamber is one common implementation
Burst and surge: coupling/decoupling networks selected for the applicable power, signal or network port and coupling mode
Conducted RF: an injection method selected according to the port, cable and referenced basic standard; coupling clamps are not universally applicable
Conformity and documentation
EN 55035:2017 together with A11:2020 is cited as a harmonized standard under the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU. When the cited standard is correctly applied, it can provide a presumption of conformity only for the essential requirements and phenomena covered by its scope.
EN 55032 may be used to address multimedia-equipment emissions, but neither standard removes the need to identify all applicable EMC requirements. Test reports form part of the technical documentation, which manufacturers must retain for ten years after the apparatus has been placed on the market. The EU Declaration of Conformity identifies the relevant harmonized standards or other technical specifications; it does not generally have to list every individual test report.
The EMC Directive permits internal production control. Independent laboratory testing may support the assessment, but a separate third-party EMC certificate is not generally required for CE marking.
Lifecycle relevance
Use EMC pre-compliance during development to identify immunity weaknesses before formal assessment.
Review product, hardware, software, firmware and configuration changes for their effect on immunity and the documented assessment.
Monitor changes to applicable standards and their Official Journal references for products in ongoing production; a standards change does not automatically require every product already lawfully placed on the market to be retested.
