Industry stakeholders call for full EU release of the upper 6 GHz band for license-exempt Wi-Fi use ahead of a key RSPG recommendation in November 2025.

Leading telecommunications and infrastructure providers have issued an open letter to Federal Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger, urging Germany to take a clear position on the future use of the upper 6 GHz frequency band (6425–7125 MHz). The goal is to support the full release of this band for license-exempt Wi-Fi use across the European Union. Among the signatories are Deutsche Glasfaser, EWE TEL, HPE, Fritz (AVM), Lancom Systems, and NetCologne.

As an accredited test lab with international expertise in wireless certification, we consider the release of this spectrum to be a key enabler for the further development of high-performance wireless technologies – particularly in the context of Wi-Fi 7 and its relevance for data-intensive applications in Industry 4.0, eHealth, energy networks, and education.

Why the upper 6 GHz band matters:

  • Around 90% of Germany’s total data traffic is already handled via fixed-line and Wi-Fi networks.

  • Wi-Fi 7 requires channel bandwidths of up to 320 MHz, which are only available in the upper 6 GHz band.

  • Exclusive allocation to mobile network operators would likely be limited to dense urban areas, leaving rural regions underutilized.

  • Wi-Fi infrastructure is already widespread, cost-effective, and highly capable.

The next plenary session of the Radio Spectrum Policy Group (RSPG) – the EU Commission’s high-level advisory body – is scheduled for November 12, 2025. A recommendation on the use of the upper 6 GHz band is expected to be adopted during that session. Based on this recommendation, the European Commission could initiate a harmonization process at the EU level.
