Electromagnetic Compatibility

Necessity of EMC Testing

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is an essential product characteristic for all electrical products, as it ensures interference-free operation with respect to external sources. EMC is achieved by testing for electromagnetic susceptibility (EMS) and electromagnetic interference (EMI). Interference emission refers to the undesirable property of affecting other equipment by electromagnetic radiation. Susceptibility, on the other hand, describes the resistance of a device under test to interference from other devices. These tests are an essential part of product development to meet the required standards and ensure the associated market launch of your product. Within the following frequency ranges we offer our EMC testing services:

EMC Immunity (Susceptibility) Tests
  • Radiated Immunity (EN 61000-4-3): 80 MHz – 6 GHz
  • Conducted Immunity (EN 61000-4-6): 150 kHz – 230 MHz
  • Magnetic Field Immunity (EN 61000-4-8): 50 / 60 Hz
  • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD, EN 61000-4-2)
EMC Emission Tests
  • Radiated Emissions (CISPR 32): 30 MHz – 40 GHz
  • Conducted Emissions (CISPR 32): 150 kHz – 2.1 GHz
  • Harmonic Current Emissions (EN 61000-3-2)
  • Voltage Fluctuation / Flicker (EN 61000-3-3)
Insight Lab

EMC Lab: Wireless Power Transmitter

Discover a test with Wireless Power Transmitter in the EMC lab in the series "Insight Lab" of IBL-Lab GmbH. The transmitter sends power to the reference receiver via magnetic field coupling. With a field strength measuring head we measure the field strength at a distance of 20 cm from transmitter and receiver over 6 minutes at 120 kHz frequency.

Six Reasons why EMC Compliance Testing is Important

  1. Proper function:
EMC testing ensures that your product works as intended and is not affected by external electromagnetic radiation.

  2. Cost savings:
The propability of technical support or warranty claims and associated repairs or maintenance costs is reduced.

  3. Compliance:
EMC testing ensures that your product complies with regulatory and legal standards and regulations required by regulatory agencies in many countries.

  4. Market Suitability:
To be approved for use in the marketplace, electronic devices in many countries must meet metrics set by regulations and standards.

  5. Reliability:
Compliance with emission and immunity requirements increases the life of a device and improves its reliability.

  6. Customer satisfaction:
Extensive EMC testing guarantees to improve customer satisfaction as well as the brand image of your product.

Frequently Asked Questions

All you need to know about EMC testing

What does EMC means?

EMC describes the ability of an electric or electronic device to function satisfactorily in its electromagnetic environment without affecting other devices by introducing intolerable electromagnetic disturbances. This means that a product is electromagnetically compatible if it does not itself generate any interference (EMI) and is insensitive to possible interference from other products (EMS).

What does EMI and EMS stand for?

EMI means Electromagnetic Interference and describes, that a device is producing electromagnetic interferences and disrupts the operation of other electronic devices. EMI can be both man-made such as computers and naturally arising like for example solar radiation or electrical storms.
EMS means Electromagnetic Susceptibility and describes the ability of a system or device to operate without performance degradation under the influence of electromagnetic disturbances.

Why is EMC testing important?

Electromagnetic compatibility testing is a key to obtaining worldwide type approval. It is therefore important to determine whether a device meets the test standards. Without EMC testing, there would be an immense risk that, for example, the transmission power of smart devices or the function of vehicle radars would be severely impaired. Therefore, all products that are required for these machines must pass numerous tests to meet the requirements and ensure EMC compliance. This is the only way to ensure a successful market launch of your product.

Is EMC testing mandatory?

EMS and EMI testing are part of product development, so all devices must undergo this test. On the European market, all electrical and electronic equipment must meet the standard compliance and be designated with the CE marking.

What is measured during EMC tests?

EMC testing includes measurements of electromagnetic emissions generated on the input and output cables and in the form of electric fields in the environment of the device. In addition, immunity to various interference phenomena on the input and output cables is measured, as well as to electric fields generated by other electrical equipment and radio transmitters. Last but not least, immunity to electrostatic discharges generated by human intervention is tested.
For a successful EMC compliance test we recommend choosing an accredited testing lab, that helps you in all steps and ensures your device is ready for market access.
